The heading of this blog entry resonates strongly with us at the Vancouver Moda Hotel. One of the defining characteristics of this Vancouver boutique hotel is its landmark tie to Vancouver’s history.

If you have read our History page, you know that the Vancouver Moda Hotel was formerly known as the Dufferin Hotel, built in 1908 and named after the Governor General of Canada, Lord Dufferin. It was designed by famed, local architects, Parr and Fee, whose other noteworthy buildings include The Manhattan Block, and Hotel Europe in Gastown. During its 100 years of existence, it had fallen into some disrepair and had lost its luster and life.

One of our key goals when we purchased the property was to breathe life back into this wonderful, ‘old soul’ of a building to be shared, appreciated and enjoyed by all. As part of this endeavour, there was a tricky balance of modernizing the property with all the conveniences that present travelers require, but maintaining the character that defines the building. We freshened up the outside of the building with a new coat of paint, but kept its beautiful original brick façade and cornice detail. We exposed original hard wood, terrazzo and tile floors and wood beams wherever possible; we kept rooms sizes and layouts pretty much as we found them; and brought ceiling back to their original heights. Interiors were modernized, and given a contemporary feel that today’s travelers seek out.

The end result, we believe is a hotel that has its own character, style and personality. The building has its minor quirks – remember it is over 100 years old – but we love them! And if you value ‘character’, we are sure you will too!

After Mctrax recording artist TOBI made this statement having contributed the song and video “There’s Always Hope,” Mctrax CEO bassist and mega-hit songwriter Andy Fraser made it official that they intended to further support the “Artist Support Japan” cause by taking the message on a US/ Canadian promotional awareness tour.

“Both Tobi and I are honored, ready and willing to do our part, Fraser states “there are so many other things that keep us distracted, the world needs reminding.”

The Artist’s Support Japan website gives celebrity musicians of all genres the opportunity to contribute improvisational material for their fans. The first artist to post material to the website was the Tom Hollister Trio, and has since received contributions from a wide variety of such celebrity musicians as Glenn Hughes, Ron Sexsmith, Paul Rodgers, Rosanne Cash, George Winston and LA Guns, among others. “We’ve got 60 videos on Artists Support Japan yet Andy and Tobi have been able to create something that is unique, magical and a video that particularly appeals to younger Japanese people” states co-founder Graham Thomas. “Their message is imbued with sympathy but is uplifting and full of hope; it goes without saying that the song “There’s Always Hope” is beautiful and masterful.”

ABOUT ARTISTS SUPPORT JAPAN

“Artists Support Japan” originated from former Satchi and Satchi CEO Graham Thomas and former Guns ‘n Roses manager Alan Niven and his partner Heather. The idea was to find a way to utilize the Internet in order to bring more awareness to the Japan tragedy. “Together we formulated the idea of a site where artists could post both messages and music in support of those in need,” states Niven. “The response has been amazing, and we thank all those who have contributed from the bottom of our hearts.”

On behalf of the staff at Moda Hotel, Red Card Sports Bar, Cibo Trattoria, Uva Wine Bar and Viti Wine Lager Store, we thank the Vancouver Police Department, the City of Vancouver and the thousands of volunteers who are helping to clean up downtown Vancouver today. We have also encouraged all of our staff to join the many volunteers today if possible and become the positive force that makes Vancouver such a wonderful place to live.  All of us at 900 Seymour really do love Vancouver, and want it to be restored as quickly as possible to what we are known for – the most beautiful city in the world.

Vancouver, B.C. – On behalf of the players and the entire organization, Canucks Sports & Entertainment would like to thank our fans for the pride and passion you demonstrated throughout our 40th Anniversary season and the Stanley Cup playoffs. It’s what makes playing and living in Vancouver special and is something we are all grateful for.

Canucks Sports & Entertainment encouraged our fans all season long to Celebrate Responsibly. The pride our fans showed in our team throughout the regular season and playoffs was incredible and we are very grateful for that support. The destructive actions and needless violence demonstrated by a minority of people last night in Vancouver is highly disappointing to us all.

As an organization we would like to thank the law enforcement agencies, fire and rescue workers who displayed courage and expertise during a very difficult situation. We are proud of the city we live and play in and know that the actions of these misguided individuals are not reflective of the citizens of Vancouver or of any true fans of the Canucks or the game of hockey.

A Message from Tourism Vancouver

The people of Vancouver are both deeply disappointed and saddened by the actions of a minority that caused damage to both property and our reputation after the Stanley Cup finals.  This was an aberration for which there is no excuse.  It is also not representative of who we are as a city.

Today, we pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off to ensure that visitors to Vancouver feel welcomed and safe, and that their experience here is both enjoyable and memorable for all the right reasons.

“So Chic! comfy & cute”
I went to stay at Moda for a week and it was my first time to Vancouver. The location was PERFECT ! downtown Van was only a few blocks away, a good walk to gastown too. Overall, my stay was great. Everyday I came back to my hotel room and it looked brand new ! Now, I do admit the walls are a bit thin so you can hear a little bit of hallway noise but nothing that was enough to bother us. Ohh and a greattt bed too ! Nice linens and clean bathroom.
Uva bar has greatttt drinks ! The Hotel was a great price and a good stay. I would def stay again. Stayed April 2011, traveled as a couple.

“Favorite Vancouver Hotels”
This is our 3rd or 4th time staying at the Moda Hotel. Living in Seattle, we usually go to Vancouver at least 1 or more times a year. We have stayed at many hotels in Vancouver ranging from 3-5 stars. Currently Moda is our very favorite. The Moda is a great little boutique hotel in a great location. Just a few block away from Robson street shop, Yaletown, Chinatown or Gastown. As always we spent part of the evenings at UVA sipping one of their fantastic cocktails, it is great to have such a chic bar with great handcrafted cocktails just downstairs. The bartender at UVA was, as always helpful, friendly and gave a laundry list of other great bars to try. We had lunch /snack at Red Card there we also found a great atmosphere and good food. The hotel rooms are small, but clean and stylish. The rates are usually relatively cheap compared to other hotels in the same class. Probably can’t do better for price, location and amenities. Stayed April 2011, traveled as a couple.
Room Tip: Have a drink at UVA.

Great value and location.  Friendly staff and very clean room. Located in the heart of downtown and there is a Starbucks next to hotel. Room size is not large but functional. Nice decor and LCD tv with lots of channels. FREE INTERNET. Stayed April 2011.

“The Best Customer Service from Front Desk Guest Clerk, Philipe”
My boyfriend and I decided to stay over night in Vancouver after our flight back from San Franscisco before we headed home to Langley. He was suffering from really bad allergies on the night we stayed, Philipe from the front desk was amazing. He went from room to room with us to so we could have a room that didn’t have fumes from the recent renovation he gave us the perfect room, brought up new keys and an usb cable for our laptop!! Amazing I have stayed at 5star hotels and I had the best experience here, even if the hotel was 3 star!! WOW!! Stayed April 2011, traveled as a couple.
Room Tip: Be authentic and treat people kindly!
